5 Important Things You Should Do During Period

Periods are a natural part of every woman’s life. However, for some women, it can come with uncomfortable symptoms, like cramps and mood swings. Taking good care of yourself during this time is important for both your physical and mental health.

In this article, we will explore five key aspects of self-care that can help make your period more bearable. Whether you’re just experiencing your first period or have been managing it for years, these tips can help ensure that your period is as comfortable as possible.

5 important things for self-care during period

I curated these tips to help you cope better with menstrual discomfort:

1. Stay Hydrated

This might seem simple, but drinking enough water can really make a huge difference in how you feel. During your period, your body can retain water. This can lead to bloating and discomfort.

Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, can help reduce these symptoms. Water also helps to ease menstrual cramps because it keeps your body’s system running smoothly.

Even though it’s tempting, try limiting caffeinated drinks like coffee and soda, as caffeine can worsen bloating and even increase cramps. Ensuring you drink enough water can make your period a bit more comfortable.

2. Eat Nutritious Foods

Diet directly impacts how your body handles the ebb and flow of menstruation. During periods, you’d want to give your body the fuel it needs by reaching for fresh fruits, green veggies(leafy), and whole grains.

These pack vitamins and minerals that help ease cramping and mood swings. Additionally, ensure your foods load sufficient amounts of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, as they can help reduce muscle cramps(1). Think about tasty bananas, crunchy almonds, or leafy greens.

Incorporating iron-fortified foods, like wholemeal pasta and bread, tofu, and liverwurst, is fantastic as your body loses iron with menstrual blood.

While you’re at it, try to cut down on salty snacks and fast food. These two can make bloating worse and make you feel sluggish. Instead, create balanced meals with plenty of nutrients to help your body cope with menstrual symptoms and revitalize your energy.

3. Get Enough Rest

You’re more likely to get drained out of energy with persisting mood swings during menstruation. This makes it extra important to get plenty of sleep and allow time to relax and recuperate.

When you don’t sleep enough, you may notice that your cramps worsen and your mood swings get more intense. That’s because sleep helps your body heal and regenerate, balancing hormone levels and shrinking inflammation, which lessens period pain.

To help improve your sleep, try creating a calming bedtime routine. Consider including activities like reading, listening to soothing music, or doing gentle stretches.

Also, try to keep your bedroom environment conducive to sleep: maintain a comfortable temperature and minimize noise and light.

4. Exercise Lightly

It might not always feel like the most appealing option, especially when you’re dealing with cramps or feeling tired. However, gentle physical activity can significantly help with period symptoms.

Exercise causes your body to release endorphins, which are natural painkillers and mood lifters. These endorphins can make you happier and reduce the perception of pain, including menstrual cramps.

It helps to get rid of bloating and stiffness, too. Taking a leisurely walk, doing some yoga, or even stretching at home are excellent options. These exercises are not too intense but can keep you active and help you feel better.

So, even if your period makes you feel like curling up and not moving much, try these gentle workouts. This has always been an easy step for me to ease discomfort and boost my mood during that time of the month.

5. Use Heat Therapy

This is a cozy, tried-and-tested way to care for yourself during your period. It’s kind of like giving your body a warm hug when it feels achy or tense.

Many women find that applying a bit of heat to their lower abdomen relaxes their muscles and soothes menstrual cramps. There are various heat therapy forms to use, such as a warm bath, a hot water bottle, or a heating pad.

Any of these should work well to increase blood flow to the area and reduce pain. Taking a warm bath can equally be helpful. It gives you a moment to relax and unwind completely.

You don’t want to burn your skin, so don’t apply sweltering heat. Just comfortably warm is enough to provide relief.

This is a wrap

Taking care of yourself during your period is essential for staying comfortable and managing symptoms. Remember to eat nutritious foods to give your body the energy and minerals it needs.

Getting enough rest is crucial for healing and feeling your best. Light exercise can boost your mood and reduce discomfort, while heat therapy offers a cozy way to ease cramps.

Lastly, don’t forget the power of staying hydrated to help with bloating and overall well-being. By incorporating these five important self-care practices into your routine, you can navigate your menstrual cycle with more ease and comfort.

Your period doesn’t have to be a time you dread. With the right care, it can be a period of nurturing and attentiveness towards your body’s needs.
